Portrait of Humanity
My winning portrait of Osaeloke & shortlisted picture of 8-year-old Cuban boxer Nailan feature in Portrait of Humanity Vol. 6 book (Bluecoat Press, 2024)
I took this picture of Ossie at the end of a gruelling 12-hour shift. Three years earlier he’d supported my wife with compassion and respect leading up to our daughter’s birth. Working at a unit facing myriad challenges takes a physical, psychological and emotional toll. The son of an NHS nurse, I was not only determined to document healthcare workers’ fragility, but also the resilience and shared humanity that comes with caring for people and bringing new life into the world.
“Now in its sixth edition, the Portrait of Humanity award by British Journal of Photography returns once more to celebrate diversity, community and unity through photography. 199 portals into the human experience: stories of resilience, kindness and hope.“
